The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration has announced a $250,000 grant program aimed at businesses and organizations to implement Safe Haven Baby Boxes throughout the state. These boxes provide secure locations where parents can surrender their newborns confidentially. The initiative is part of a broader effort to support mothers and infants during their most vulnerable times.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized the importance of the program, stating that it will provide resources and safe options for struggling new mothers. The grant is available to hospitals with emergency rooms, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments at both city and county levels. Applications for the grant will be available starting in September and will remain open indefinitely.
The Safe Haven Baby Box program is designed to prevent the illegal abandonment of newborns. The boxes are equipped with technology to ensure the safety and anonymity of the mothers. So far, two infants have already been surrendered at a designated Safe Haven Baby Box location in Little Rock. The state aims to support about a dozen organizations in installing these boxes with the $250,000 grant.
The grant is part of Governor Sanders’ commitment to ensuring the health and safety of Arkansas’ youngest and most vulnerable citizens. Secretary Jim Hudson of the Department of Finance and Administration encouraged eligible organizations across the state to consider applying for the funding. The program is expected to save lives and build a culture of life in Arkansas.
