Former Homewood finance director pleads guilty to stealing nearly $1 million from city

Robert Burgett, the former finance director of Homewood, has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $1 million from the city. The theft was discovered after irregularities were noticed in the movement of city funds shortly before Burgett’s retirement on March 31, 2024. Burgett, 63, was arrested on April 9, 2024, and charged with aggravated theft by deception, a Class A felony. The investigation, which involved the FBI and Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, found that Burgett misused city funds in the days leading up to his retirement. The stolen amount, which is in the six-figure range, was frozen by authorities to prevent further loss. The city of Homewood has taken steps to recover the funds and is conducting a thorough examination of how the misappropriations occurred. Burgett’s plea deal includes a $500,000 bond and a requirement to pay restitution. The case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in public finance.
