Jim McIntire, former WA treasurer during financial crisis, dies at 71

James Leonard McIntire, the 22nd Washington State Treasurer, passed away on August 16, 2024, at the age of 71. McIntire served two terms as Washington State Treasurer from 2008 to 2017, during which he navigated the state through the global financial crisis. Born in Bluffton, Ohio, on April 9, 1953, McIntire earned a Bachelor of Arts in urban and regional affairs from Macalester College, a Master of Arts in public policy from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington. His early career included stints as an economist for the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee and the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. He later worked as a special legislative assistant for California Congressman Augustus F. Hawkins and as a research scientist for the Battelle Human Affairs Research Center. McIntire also served as a senior lecturer at the University of Washington’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs and was a professor there until his death. He was a member of the Democratic Party and previously served as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives, representing the 46th district from 1998 to 2009. McIntire’s tenure as treasurer was marked by his handling of the state’s finances during the financial crisis, earning him recognition for his fiscal management skills. He is survived by his family and friends, who will miss him deeply. A memorial service will be held on September 19, 2024, at the University Congregational UCC in Seattle.
