Jim McIntire, former WA treasurer during financial crisis, dies at 71

James L. McIntire, the 22nd Washington State Treasurer, passed away at the age of 71. McIntire served two terms as the state treasurer from 2008 to 2017, navigating the state through the financial crisis. He was born on April 9, 1953, in Bluffton, Ohio, and earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington. McIntire began his career as an economist for the United States Congress and later served as a senior lecturer at the University of Washington’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs. He also held various positions, including director of the Fiscal Policy Center at the University of Washington and chairman of the Washington Community Economic Revitalization Board.

During his tenure as treasurer, McIntire managed the state’s finances effectively, ensuring stability during the financial crisis. He was known for his fiscal expertise and commitment to public service. After leaving office, McIntire continued to be involved in public policy, contributing to various organizations and institutions. His passing is a significant loss to the state and the community, where he was deeply respected for his dedication and leadership. A memorial service will be held on September 19, 2024, at the University Congregational UCC in Seattle.
