Need to address $4-trillion financing gap to meet sustainable development goals: FM Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the urgent need to address the $4 trillion financing gap to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs). Speaking at the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit, Sitharaman highlighted the pressing challenge of inadequate access to development finance, which hinders developing economies from achieving their development goals. She noted that the SDG financing gap is estimated at $4 trillion annually for developing countries, with recent reports indicating stagnation in the implementation of many SDGs in these economies. Sitharaman also pointed out that developing countries face significant shortfalls in climate financing, requiring approximately $6 trillion by 2030 to achieve just half of their existing climate targets. She called for pragmatic actions and suggestions to address this issue and accelerate financial inclusion. The Finance Minister also stressed the importance of debt relief and liquidity support mechanisms, citing the need for reforms at Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to mobilize additional financial flows. Sitharaman underscored the critical role of financial inclusion and the need for global cooperation to bridge the financing gap and achieve the SDGs.
